Three Tune Tuesday : Some Post Shoegaze

Post Shoegaze...I don't think that's a term, but I'm going to use it anyway. I'm a very, very, very appreciative fan of all things shoegaze. It started when I bought MBV's Loveless in college. I don't know why, but the first listen to that disc...well, I was enamored. Then I threw on the old head phones, and holy hell...I was like, "What in the world is this sound?" It's ethereal and classical...I dare say like an overdubbed orchestra on top of Wilson harmonies. Yeah, I said it...that's what I think of shoegaze.

For this #threetunetuesday post, I wanted to go with some dreampop songs that came after the shoegaze heyday. These are three songs that I've always associated with MBY or Slowdive in some way shape or form.

M83 : Run Into Flowers

What a song...long before their fame, this one on their second album was one that caught my ear years ago. I would recommend listening to this one with ear buds. I used to jack up the volume in my Accord when commuted between Wisconsin Rapids and Green Bay, likely to the detriment to my ears. Earbuds are the way to go, anyway. You can hear all those MBV influenced sounds and vocals going on below the noise; etheral bliss!

Deerhunter : Focus Group

Source

Oh yeah, here we go...back to the Deerhunter. This one sounds like one of the early MBV tracks; sparse and echoes, and then the chorus hits with that wall of sound. Distortion, ethereal, and slightly out of tune. Lovely, I dare say.

Astrobrite : Crushed

Source

Maybe some of you know Astrobrite, maybe not. I found them when I was obsessed with shoegaze music and college, and needed that extra little bit more. I feel like I found this artist on some old Netscape list. Needless to say, it was Napster time, and a few days later, I had this gem downloaded.

This is pretty much classic shoegaze; guitars and guitars and guitars overlayed to create that orchestral theme. Ethereal, maybe. Have I written that word yet?

This whole album is filled with some MBV love. Check it out if it appeals to you!

Thanks for stopping by for #TTT as initiated by @ablaze! If you have some shoegaze gems, old or new, please, let me know below in the comments! Until next week!

Nice I actually know one of the bands you chose here! Love M83, Midnight City is one of my favorites of theirs and I think is one of their more popular ones.

This little gem here is a nice listen, took a bit to get going but I like the sound of it.

I really liked their early stuff but then I faded away from their later stuff. Man time flies with music. Unreal that some of this stuff is old(ish) already.

Ah seriously, why did this post only make $0.66 - madness....

Absolute cracking tunes and I lived this description of shoegaze.

It's ethereal and classical...I dare say like an overdubbed orchestra on top of Wilson harmonies.

I always like M83, they have a very different sound, but very distinctive to them I find. Run Into Flowers.... what a song, and before they had made it big... Great choice man... That Astrobite tune was quality too, I listened to them while working on a laptop, so didn't get that headphone tight sound, but still liked em all.

I love Hive, you learn something new every day, well at least I do!
Shoegaze - well that is a new one on me.
I am pretty sure I have heard some M83 before and I find it a little more upbeat than the other two.
Awesome set of tunes for #ttt
My favourite order would be M83 then Astrobite then Deerhunter

Wow I never heard of the music genre before. I quite liked them. Deerhunter was my favourite. I'm here in kitchen having breakfast listening on the phone but I would think this music needs a good set of headphones with the volume turned to 11
