Fantastic Beasts and Queens

As mentioned before, if I don't just finish watching something or it is a while before the next season I tend to just kinda forget about it until the day I go "Oh, yeah, I was watching that thing."

This weeks forgotten because shit takes forever to release show is:

His Dark Materials ~ 3 Seasons

Catching up on His Dark Materials showed me something obvious that I completely missed. I tend to have Youtube, or Spotify on while working but for some reason always try watch things in a dedicated fashion.

Seeing as I have only one screen this becomes a problem when I also want to be getting things done.

What this numbnuts forgot though was that a phone is just a computer for small brains. So I can use the phone to play the small brain things.

Voila.

Big Brain.

Anyhow His Dark Materials from what I recall continues from the movies "The Golden Compass" , which I really liked because it is like magic and animals, also it has talking animals so win win.

If you have seen the movies then it can be a bit abrupt at first since I think things start pretty much at the beginning and with a little different timeline.

Then again who the fuck remembers.

It can just feel a bit off though since it won't align with nostalgia.

Overall I like His Dark Materials, although I must say in Season 3, especially the lead "Lyra" can be so irritating with her pointless stubbornness and not just doing what she aught to.

Fortunately, they use that as a plot convenience and tend to redeem all the stupid actions and turn them into "destiny".

Not going to lie, but I did skip almost all political garbage. Since there is a big organization called the Magisterium... I think. They are basically the government of the world with heavy religious basis. They push this at all costs.

From that Lyra is the spawn of a mother who is power hungry and deeply rooted in the government and her father is an anarchist that is completely opposed to the lies. Both don't actually even care or want for their daughter but alone each one of them plays their part in their own way.

The mother tends to be in insidious meetings making plans, which I skip, the dad is absent for most parts except when he is breaking shit, and we mainly follow Lyra blundering along saying words and messing with all the schemes the adults have concocted.

All in all not bad.

Fortunately, the story has magic in the form of Dust which allows things like Lyra to have her spirit animal, there's a cool bear that gets drunk and overall it is actually more complex than the entirety of Game of Thrones.

Then again Bob the Builder is more complex than GOT.

The Queens Gambit

Mostly I avoid emotional weak wrist oh deary me mental health and breakdown shows by a mile. Sometimes they can be done well but mostly these days I think anything that seems even remotely like it will try to highlight some personal or social element use firstly their already confuckulated ideologies and prey on the fact that you are not supposed to dislike people who don't conform to your "norm".

Obviously with in the scope of their "norm" and in the end no one asked Norm, who by the way already offed themselves because they did not fit in the new norm.

The Queens Gambit trailer gave me those vibes the first time I watched it. Again made worse by anyone who mentions it, saying it is so great.

It is.

It is not though an overly drawn-out shitshow of irrational pity hoarding as you would expect.

The show is also not very Chess heavy although it is the focus. The concepts are introduced as any foreign concept might be like how magic works in a specific world.

The lead girl is mostly actually cold, which makes her far more relatable to me, she is withdrawn yet will snap and become overly "social". Even that is tense and clearly just her learning how to act as she may have seen others interact.

As an orphan "Beth Harmon" the main character does not have all the social skills required but she does have the brain required.

Even though she has some breakdowns, and some seriously crappy luck with the people who are supposed to look after she does also have her focus which is Chess and talent.

The emotional connections and meltdowns which was my main concern to be rather irritating, actually make her rise even better as she battles stronger and more privileged opponents.

As mentioned it is also not very technical or dreary, it is similar to watching Rise of The Titans, or any sports underdog movie really.

All in all it is probably my favourite in a long time, and not sure how I kept passing it up but all good things come in time albeit 2 years later.
