Krakow's churches no.5 – Corpus Christi Basilica

After a long break, I am returning to my series about Krakow's churches. In the previous entries, with one exception, I followed the principle of visiting subsequent churches, starting from those closest to those located farthest from me. In this way, I have already visited all the churches of the old Podgórze, I still have 4 churches left in the new part of Podgórze, but they are not very attractive buildings and due to the fact that Podgórze is one of the most extensive districts of Krakow, I am not close to them at all. For this reason, as another area of exploration of Krakow's churches, I decided to cross the Vistula and go visit Krakow's Kazimierz. My unprofessional knowledge tells me that there are 4 temples to visit: St. Peter's Basilica. Michael the Archangel and Saint Stanisław in Krakow, i.e. the popular Skałka, the Church of the Holy Trinity (Bonifratr Fathers), the Church of St. Saint Catherine of Alexandria of the Augustinian Monastery and the Basilica of Corpus Christi in Krakow, from which I decided to start.

The Basilica of Corpus Christi in Krakow's Kazimierz is a Gothic church founded by King Casimir III the Great in 1335 and built in stages, from 1340 until the mid-15th century. Later, after the Swedish Deluge, the temple was completely looted and for this reason its Gothic interior is dominated by Baroque decorations. The most baroque element, i.e. the most eye-catching one, is undoubtedly the huge gilded main altar. The 21-meter-high two-story altar dates back to the first half of the 17th century. In the middle of the altar there is a painting by Thomas Dolabella, Adoration of the Shepherds. On the altar you can see many figures of Old Testament prophets: Jeremiah, Moses, David, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Zechariah and Micah.
Another interesting feature is the boat-shaped pulpit from 1750 and the largest organ in Krakow built in 1958-1963. The organ is huge, with a total of 5,950 pipes and 25 bells. It is located in the choir and on the sides of the presbytery.

Po dłuższej przerwie wracam do mojej serii opowiadającej o krakowskich kościołach. W poprzednich wpisach, z jednym wyjątkiem, kierowałem się zasadą odwiedzania kolejnych kościołów począwszy od tych najbliżej położonych, do tych najdalej położonych ode mnie. W ten sposób zwiedziłem już wszystkie kościoły starego podgórza, zostały mi jeszcze 4 kościoły w nowej części podgórza, ale nie są to zbyt atrakcyjne budowle i z uwagi na fakt, że Podgórze jest jedną z najrozleglejszych dzielnic Krakowa, przez to wcale do nich nie mam blisko. Z tego powodu, jako kolejny obszar eksploracji krakowskich kościołów postanowiłem przeprawić się przez Wisłę i iść zwiedzać Krakowski Kazimierz. Moja nieprofesjonalna wiedza mówi mi, że są tam 4 świątynie do odwiedzenia: Bazylika św. Michała Archanioła i św. Stanisława w Krakowie czyli popularna Skałka, Kościół Trójcy Przenajświętszej (oo. Bonifratrów), Kościół pw. św. Katarzyny Aleksandryjskiej Klasztoru Augustianów i Bazylika Bożego Ciała w Krakowie, od której postanowiłem rozpocząć.

Bazylika Bożego Ciała na krakowskim Kazimierzu, to gotycki kościół ufundowany przez króla Kazimierza III Wielkiego w 1335 roku wznoszony etapami, od 1340 roku aż do połowy XV wieku. Później po szwedzkim potopie świątynia została całkowicie ograbiona i z tego to właśnie powodu jej gotycka bryła we wnętrzu zdominowana jest przez wystrój barokowy. Najbardziej barokowym elementem czyli tym najbardziej przyciągającym wzrok bez wątpienia jest ogromny złocony ołtarz główny. Wysoki na 21 metrów dwupiętrowy ołtarz pochodzi z pierwszej połowy XVII wieku. Na środku ołtarza znajduje się obraz Tomasza Dolabelli Pokłon Pasterzy. Na ołtarzu dopatrzeć się można wielu figur starotestamentalnych proroków :Jeremiasza, Mojżesza, Dawida, Izajasza, Ezechiela, Daniela, Zachariasza i Micheasza.
Kolejną ciekawostka jest ambona w kształcie łodzi pochodząca z roku 1750, oraz największe organy w Krakowie zbudowane w latach 1958-1963. Organy są przeogromne, bo mają łącznie 5950 piszczałek i 25 dzwonów umieszczone są one na chórze, a także po bokach prezbiterium.
