A piece of Nigerian history for the history buffs.

I woke up today overwhelmed by thoughts of how much I know about the history of Nigeria, my country. History is something I love in a way that may come off as weird. I love to do my research about iconic historical occurrences, but whenever I find myself in a place where the 'boring' side of history is being taught, I only pretend to listen to that.

A quick attempt to jog my memory shows that I know bits about the history of a few countries (the ones that catch my fancy) in the world. That's not bad though because I've been living in Nigeria all my life. The weird part of this is that I know far less about Nigerian history than I know about the history of those other countries.

Nah, I'm not even kidding.

I heard there was a time when 'History' was part of Nigeria's school curriculum. It must have been scraped when I started schooling because I never encountered History as a subject or Course of study. The fact that I studied Government and Humanities could have helped to fill the knowledge gap I have about the history of Nigeria, but I dare to say that the part of these subjects that highlighted some Historical occurrences in Nigeria didn't seem inspiring in any way.

I didn't feel the spark to know more and it felt like each book I tried to read about Nigeria's Precolonial and Colonial eras says something slightly different from the other. I've seen some that hold a fair amount of facts, but I really can't remember a huge side of Nigerian history that can make anyone laugh. It's mostly filled with one painful experience followed by another painful experience.

It's no bloody wonder that we are perfecting this current lifestyle of taking everything that comes our way with a smiling face. We've already seen it all. We've seen all sorts of corruption, massacre, insanity, poverty and whatnot.

You get my point, right?

I know that every country had it rough, but Nigeria's history is filled with a sequence of bad experiences for our forefathers. I can't even imagine what it was like to live in Nigeria in that era. The joke's on me though... This particular era we are living in also has a lot of occurrences that will break the heart of history buffs when they see records of it a century from now.

At the moment, I'm still trying to break barriers and have my life in order, but when the time comes in the near future, I would like to spend a few moments of my life-consuming contents that will help fill my knowledge gap about Nigeria's history.

Do you know enough about the history of your country?

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma.

I really enjoy reading histories but the problem why I don't know much is that there are just few limited places where histories are written in honesty.... Most sites just write what they've been told to write

Yeah. It's in alignment with the usual statement that what we know about history are usually based on the perspective of the Writer.

Those that experienced it usually tell the story in a way that it will point them out as heroes. It's not very often we get historical records that are based on facts.

And that's why I would rather not know history than knowing a picture someone else painted for me to read his self acclaimed heroic story
