Mystery/Thriller Review: Luckiest Girl Alive (2022)

The title of this mystery thriller piqued my attention and I tried to guess what the poster could tell me about the film. In a way, I like to be able to 'judge' the film by its poster. An interesting detail in this poster is that Mila Kunis is the star actor. That's enough motivation for me to watch because this lady is a superb actress and I'm sure I've watched almost every flick she has appeared in.

This gripping yet poignant film which is about one hour, and fifty-three minutes accurately captured the social problems and menaces that our youths and adults deal with daily.

Luckiest Girl Alive (2022) is an American mystery thriller based on a novel of the same name by Jessica Knoll. It focuses on Tiffani, also called Ani, a young writer for a women's magazine who seemed to have it all. She is engaged to a wealthy man and her life is perfect. But is it?

This film takes viewers down the lane of understanding that behind Ani's beautiful and perfect facade are fear, doubt, low self-esteem and bitterness due to two traumatizing incidents in high school. These incidents are revealed when her former schoolmate in a wheelchair, writes a book detailing one of the incidents which were contrary to the true story.

Ani is forced to relive the traumatizing occurrences again and at the same time fight to redeem her reputation, self-esteem and relationship.

Review

I'm a little sad that critics reviewed this film poorly. I believe it should have a high rating and good reviews because these are common social problems that seem to have defied solutions worldwide. This film covers topics like gun violence, sexual assault or gang rape, bullying and poor parenting.

We see a teenage Ani who, because of low self-esteem, joins the wrong crowd in school. She wants to be accepted just like everyone else. Instead, her body and mind are violated and the experience stays with her all through adulthood. One thing I learned from this film is that incidents like this can haunt a person for life unless it is immediately dealt with.

Another sad part of Ani's story is that she lost the only support that could have gotten her through the traumatizing incidents. If she had a good support system, maybe her life could have taken a different turn than the one we watched. I'm almost tempted to blame the mother for poor parenting but there was little she could do to stop the incident. But she failed to show up when she was most needed.

The cast did excellently, especially Mila Kunis as the adult Ani and Chiara Aurelia as the young Ani. This is my first time watching Chiara Aurelia perform and I hope to see more of her movies.

The scenes, settings and visual effects were not bad. There were lots of flashback scenes connecting the past to the present and explaining the incidents. They were smooth to watch. I see no reason to complain about the cinematography as I was more into the theme and storyline.

Overall, it's a watchworthy film and I'll recommend it to all mystery/thriller lovers.
