We need a symbol

Symbols matter. They're powerful and, the good ones, capture the essence of whatever they symbolize. The truly good symbols are austerely simple, yet still capture that essence effortlessly.

The Hivebits community recently named the smallest HBIT unit as the "quark." Now, we need a symbol.

Hivebits already has a logo, the animated gif below. Now, we need something that can be typed. So, we're looking here for something that's a Unicode character. It can be a "letter" looking symbol, or a picture looking symbol, or whatever. It just needs to have a Unicode code.

Understand, even if a character has a Unicode code, it still might not show up in browsers. You can still nominate that character if you wish, but we're going to vote on it. I'm not sure if a character that doesn't show up in most browsers will garner votes...something to consider.

A couple of resources:

A contest

We'll make a contest out of this, just as we did with the quark being named. We'll eventually vote for the winner. The prize will be the same also: 42.8 HBIT to the user who suggests the winning symbol.

To enter, simply comment on this page. Here's what a suggestion might look like:

  • Suggested symbol: Д (Cyrillic Capital Letter De) with Unicode U+0414
  • Reason: This is optional, but you might want to explain why your suggested symbol is so awesome and should be the quark symbol.

Timeline

The nomination period is open now. (I'm thinking at least a week, then we'll go from there.)
Voting in the future. I'll leave an exact date open for now until nominations have subsided.

A side note
I suggested several years ago that the "Shi" symbol シ be used for the satoshi. It did show up on the Bitcoin wiki, along with some others. It seems to me, however, that most people just have adopted "sats" and left it at that. And another side note, the Grin cryptocurrency, which I like, adopted the Tsu ツ which looks pretty close to the Shi, so that's neat.

Wrap up

Like the other contest, this almost entirely for the sheer fun of it. @noctury became an HBIT legend by naming the quark. The bragging rights are forever! So, we're now looking for the next Hivebits legend.

Nominate your symbol now as a comment below. :)

Inserting ⍨ works to insert the symbol on a web page.

I think it's cute and uses the tilde (which I think represents the quark); so we get a cute quark.

Huh! I would not have ever thought something that simple would work. Thanks!
