Cyber security is very important in the present world because of the rapid growth in technology. As the technological advances increases, so also the rate of cyber fraudulent activity.

The impact of ICT really outweighs any of the negative effects it has. If not because of ICT, I wonder where we would have been today and the kind of development we have around. In as much as these developments are visible many aren't happy about hence device devious means to gain their way into people.

Cyber security is everyone's responsibility today. You can't afford to make use of all digital platforms without a deliberate attempt to safe guard your account and other valuable information.
I want to appreciate the entire management of this community for this timely theme for edition 2. I have been a victim of cyber security before. I intend to share my story, how I managed it, the effect it had on me and the lessons learnt from the whole experience. This I believe would go a long t help someone out there.

After I got married newly, my knowledge and understanding about social media platforms wasn't as sound as it is today. There were certain functions I couldn't perform and also lack the necessary security tips even though I tried with the little I knew but things got to change over time. One beautiful morning I received a chat and display of advertisement on how I can multiplied my income. If I invest an amount, I would receive double in return within just 48minutes. That gladdens my heart because I needed money to sort out things. It appeared catching and promising hmmm I eventually said let me give a trial and see.

I replied the message that I am interested in the investment. He asked of the package I want to invest. I fed him with all necessary information needed. Finally he dropped an account number for me to credit it so that I would receive double of what I invested in less than one hour. I quickly lodged ₦10,000 with the whole of my heart with high expectations of a good return of ₦20,000. I started imagining what to buy as soon as the money drops. After ten minutes I said let me follow up to ascertain the progress. He said don't worry my transaction is processing. After 35 minutes the language changed and the guy's voice started cracking ....after a while the phone number was switched off. That's how they got me and I couldn't recover my money.

On another occasion, I received a call that we would be having a meeting for all members of a particular WhatsApp group. He said a code will be sent to me to reset the platform for the meeting. When I received the code, I sent it back to him but he couldn't access it because I did my two way verification. Immediately the demand was consistent I got myself and realised that it was a fraudster.
I tried checking my WhatsApp account it was almost hacked but thank God I recovered everything.

How did I feel?

Sincerely I felt very bad going through all those experiences. It was painful but there are lessons learnt.

How I managed it and lessons learnt.

I shared it with my wife and a close friend and they gave me good counsel on how to identify fraudsters easily. I have received more than five calls now and I discerned them to be fraudsters.
Some of the lessons are;

• Don't be desperate about money. Be patient because God's time is the best.
• Be careful of your password and keep them safe.
• Try and do at least two ways verification and never disclose your details anyhow.
• Don't login to website or click on links anyhow.
