The Thin Line Between Luck and Hardwork

You can all agree with me that the debate between luck and hard work is an age-old one and honestly, it's always difficult to determine which of them has more impact in our success story.

I believe most persons if not all must have experienced a bit of luck and hardwork in their journey to success. I believe everyone has a story to tell of their experiences. I have also experienced luck and hardwork in so many occasions and I would be sharing just one of each of my experiences.

A STORY WHERE I WAS LUCKY

Reading has always been a problem to me. I always find it difficult reading but I always end up excelling in my studies. If this isn't luck, then I don't know what else to call it because all through my school days, I have never failed any subject or course. I have always been one of the best students in the class even though I play alot and don't always see reasons to read.

Most of my classmates work so hard but ends up failing most of the time. You will see them always reading but you will never see me reading. All the teachers knew me to be the play type and they have always wondered how come I always excel in my studies despite knowing fully well that I am not the type that likes reading.

If you are from Nigeria, you should know how difficult it is to gain admission into higher institution especially when you have to pass through JAMB examination. It came as a surprise to many that I passed the exam and got admission to study my chosen course the same year I finished my secondary school without any stress. I also got my WAEC result in one sitting without stress. This is the same exam people write countless times before making it. Can you believe I had the best result in the school? How is that even possible? Best result coming from someone who is unserious when it when it comes to reading?

Do you still think this isn't luck? How else would you explain this because I know so many persons who were really brilliant but couldn't pass their JAMB and WAEC in one sitting. I know so many people who studied so hard and yet they couldn't gain admission into higher institution same year but all these came to me easily despite not working so hard for it. I bet you would agree with me that this is luck.

A STORY WHERE NY HARD WORK PAID OFF

After my National youth service, it was really difficult getting a job. I actually thought my Uncle would help me get a job since he was in government and had lots of connection but I guess I was wrong. I met him but he told me he couldn't help me since he lost the election and couldn't retain his position. I had no other option than to search for a job myself.

I got a marketing job after so many months of searching where we were told that we had to work for 3 months without pay and after the third month, if we were productive, they would promote us to the position of an assistant manager and thats when we can start receiving salary. I never knew how tedious the job was going to be but I had to take it since that was the only option available at that time.

I found out that we were meant to carry electronics in bags and go around to market these products and that was already a turn off for me but I felt helpless at that point. They told us that they would only be promoting just two persons in the new branch and it's going to be the person who had the highest sales within that period. I knew it would be difficut because I had colleagues that already had good records since I didn't join early. Despite that, I still decided to give it a try since I was tired of searching for jobs.

At first, it was so difficult for me to sell a single product but I knew I had to work harder if I want to be part of the persons that would be promoted. Within a month, all my colleges were amazed at my sudden improvement because I developed lots of strategies that I started using to sell off my products. It even got to a time that whenever I go out to make sales, you wouldn't see me come back with any product.

After the third month, the promotion didn't happen as we were told. A lot of persons had to quit because they couldn't keep up, butI was determined to get to the end since its something I had already started. The promotion ended up happening after the eight month, and I guess my hardwork paid off because I was the only one promoted in the office. Nobody could dispute my promotion because they knew how hard I worked to get it. I was the best in production and my records could speak for itself.

WHAT THESE TWO EXPERIENCES TAUGHT ME

These two experiences taught me that both luck and hard work are crucial in one's journey to success since both can shape our lives and our careers if and only if we recognize their roles in our lives and make the most out of both of them.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Haha, you remind me of one of my classmates back then in primary school. This boy played a lot and could never be caught reading, yet he always topped the class. I used to think that he low-key reads at home and deceives everyone in class with pretense. But you've given me another angle, perhaps he was a lucky guy just like you.

It's inspiring to read that you pushed yourself to work really hard and make those sales despite the odds.

This was an interesting read 👍, thanks for sharing!

My God... You mean you worked for eight solid months without pay?
Wow! That's scary.
How did you cope? Did you transport yourself? Did they at least give you money for feeding?
In my opinion, those guys deserve to rot in jail...😡

Sure.. That's because I had a goal I wanted to accomplish. They were not paying me but I was sure paying myself. I made money while in field. The company don't care how much you sell their products, what they care about is for you to tender the complete amount they asked you to sell the product.

So I was always selling the product far above the company price and I made lots of profit.

Okay... this is better.
I don't know much about marketing that's why that concept of no pay really piqued my interest.
You did well!

Thanks so much. In marketing most times, you get to pay yourself.
