Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers - A Horrible Movie

This post will include spoilers for the movie Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. I don't think this post even counts as a review. But, if you want a quick, spoiler-free review, here it is 2/10. And that's just me giving 1 each time the movie had a funny joke. Not funny "hahaha", but funny as in "hmmm".

Movie Synopsis

It's a live-action meta-movie where different styles of animation characters live alongside humans. It's about Chip and Dale 30 years after the cancelation of their show. One is adjusting well to life after fame while the other struggling to remain famous.

What I Liked About The Movie

J.K. Simmons as Captain Putty and there were two funny-ish jokes.

That's it. That's literally all I liked about the movie.

What I Didn't Like About The Movie

Everything. Honestly, what didn't I dislike about this movie?

The animation was horribly executed all around. Like, honestly, Space Jam had better animation. And I am talking about the 1996 Space Jam. It is very inconsistent and looks very weird when animated characters are holding real-life objects and vice versa.

There's a whole section of the movie talking about how some characters chose to be 3D instead of 2D animated which didn't make sense as the "2D" characters are still 3D just with fewer frames. So, that whole part doesn't make sense.

What makes this worse is the fact that the movie made fun of other animation styles as if theirs is any better. May I remind Disney that they made the live-action Lion King movie in 2019 and they did it in an absolutely horrible fashion?

Some shots are horribly coordinated with the filming shifting within the same shot.

They brought Seth Rogen into this project to make fun of Beowulf's animation style which as we established, Chip 'n Dale's animation style isn't any better by any stretch of the imagination. Rogen voices different characters, but more on that later.

The voice acting is absolutely egregious as well. Beside J.K Simmons, everyone in that movie has done a horrible job, not bad at best. Listen to the characters talk without seeing the screen and you wouldn't know whether the characters are happy, sad, angry, or delighted most of the time.

The Peter Pan character is horrible on every level, to a sickening degree. Peter Pan's character is horribly made, that's a done deal. But, there's a shade of his background matching that of Bobby Driscoll, the actor who voiced the character in the 50s.

The issue with that is the fact that Bobby Driscoll's life was a tragedy after he played the role as his career slowly declined until he died at the age of 31 due to drug abuse. I am not going to accuse Disney of mocking Driscoll, but the parallels are all there and it was very uncomfortable.

The worst-case scenario is it was done intentionally and in the best-case scenario, it was done unintentionally due to a lack of actual studying. With the number of meta-references, it is disgusting either way as even if they're innocent they should have researched that.

The lack of self-awareness is astonishing. If they weren't aware of the Driscoll situation then they're not self-aware, simple as that. It might actually be the case as they were also mocking other animation styles and other movie aspects. When you make a movie that's supposed to be so self-aware, the intent will be attributed.

Finally, The "Comedy"

Oh. My. GOD! As a guy who started and currently operates a Comedy Community on this very platform, this was painful. The "comedy" here was heart-failure-inducing cringe!

Seth Rogen has a horrible laugh, it was mocked a couple of times. But, no! They brought all the different characters he voiced and had them do that stupid laugh.

Making a bad joke than saying "That's a bad joke" isn't funny. It is not a comedy. You calling out your own joke doesn't make suddenly funnier. And this movie was filled with that garbage-style "comedy".

Another thing that's not comedy is references. References are references. They can be fun if there's a joke, but on themselves, they're not funny by default. I don't know what happened to Hollywood's sense of humor that they treat references as comedy now.

It doesn't stop. For one hour and thirty-seven minutes, it didn't stop. Ugly Sonic, Roger Rabbit, all different characters and references that are supposed to be funny just because they're there.

Intentionally animating a bad sequence, just to have a character say it is a bad sequence isn't a joke nor does it make the sequence less bad. I can't stress that enough. The comedy in this movie was obnoxious.

In my Bad Guys (2022) review, I specifically talked about how glad the comedy in that movie wasn't the Seth Rogen type of comedy. This movie was just that; garbage jokes, then
comments saying that they're garbage jokes unless you're high.

In Conclusion

This is a garbage, waste of time movie. It has no substance, it has no sense of comedy. But, most importantly, it has no self-awareness whatsoever. And that's the worst part because that's the gimmick of the entire movie.

It is, by a landslide, the worst movie I have seen this year. It would have been tied with Morbius, except with Morbius I actually laughed even though it wasn't intentional.

DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE

I was surprised to see this series revived and it sounds like it needs to be put back on the shelf again.
