A Colourful Adire Dress.

Hello Needle workers..

It's another beautiful Monday to wake up and show up like we always do.

Saturday was a very fulfilling one as my friend who swallowed a frog (is pregnant) visited me.

"I've outgrown my dresses, they are all tight, can you quickly make me any maternity dress you can think of with this Adire (tye-dye) fabric?" Tessa quickly brought out the fabric because she knew I wouldn't decline.

The fabric colours were so beautiful that I couldn't resist.

"When do you want it?" I asked and she wanted it as soon as possible, "if I can go home with it now I will be so grateful." She concluded.

Well, what more can I do other than to put a smile on my preggie friend?

"As her Lord pleases," I responded and then I began the project.

Designed with Canva.

While I was gathering the sewing materials, I noticed she brought out something from her handbag for me.

Malt and milk, hehe. She wanted my strength to replenish as she knew I'd been working tirelessly over the week.

She came prepared haha.

It was what I needed at that moment, so I accepted it with all of my heart and then we began chatting so that I wouldn't feel bored in between.

The materials I used for the project were the Adire (tyedye) fabric, elastic, thread and bias.

While working, I noticed that the fabric was very soft and needed to be handled delicately.

IMG_20231014_155650_654.jpg

Which means I should run any wrong stitch, this was one of the challenges I encountered while cutting and sewing this fabric.

I quickly thought of a style that could be sewn within an hour or two at maximum.

A line came to my mind.

Here, I placed the fabric on the floor after taking her body measurement and marked out her just point, and under bust and then I just gave it the A shape using a round neckline.

IMG_20231014_165947_716.jpg

I marked out the back bodice too and slashed the back for the zipper allowance.

IMG_20231014_170113_959.jpg

Here, I made a sleeve that's longer than her actual sleeve measurement since I would be attaching a rubber elastic to the hem of the sleeve to give it a puffy effect.

IMG_20231014_171040_833.jpg

I placed the sleeve beside the front bodice to see how it would look like and I thought it was good to go.

IMG_20231014_171247_960.jpg

I placed the leftover fabric on the floor to cut out the strap which I would be using as a collar for the neckline.

IMG_20231014_170911_259.jpg

Here is the cutout strap.

IMG_20231014_172131_240.jpg

Now, I headed to my sewing machine to begin sewing.

It didn't require a lining since it's a free dress, so I just joined the sides together and shaped it using her bodice measurement with an additional two-inch allowance.

Pregnant women aren't comfortable with anything right, so I ensure the dress will give her the comfort she craves.

IMG_20231112_170823_549.jpg

Here is the sleeve part, I brought out my elastic and attached it to the sleeve using a small safety pin.

IMG_20231119_144020_620.jpg

IMG_20231119_143400_054.jpg

This was what it looked like after attaching the elastic to the sleeve.

IMG_20231119_143356_152.jpg

Then I added it to the bodice of the dress, attached the strap to the neckline and it was ready within 1hr:30mins.

And here is what the outfit looks like.

An up-close view of the neckline.

The full view of the dress.

And the dress is ready for my friend to rock.

She was excited I could come to her rescue that day and she ended up drinking out of the malt and milk she gave me, can you imagine?😀

I have plans to make more maternity dresses for her when I have the time because as a friend to a fashion designer, she gotta slay on free beautiful dresses.

I love the design and colour of the outfit, do you like it too?

All images used are mine, cut and sewn by me.

I know maternity dress and it's all about this kinda fabric. I wonder if it's only this fabric designated for such wears. Lol😄

You did a good job. Weldon

Hahaha, nope, it's not specially made for maternity dresses, but the preggies prefer them cause it's very light and comfortable.

Sewing Adire always comes with a bit of challenge, undoing the seam will always wreck a havoc of the dress. You did a nice job here and so thoughtful of your friend to refreshing your body with some snacks. Well done dear.

Hello @amiegeoffrey, I am impressed by the way you walk with the fabric while you build the dress, it is wonderful how you translate what your mind is thinking. This is a spectacular result, the elastic on the sleeves gave that spring and glamorous touch. The fabric looks very soft and fresh, surely your friend will not want to take off this outfit.

You have pleased your friend's taste in such a short time.

Thank you for sharing your creative content with us.

Whoa, you are really good at what you do, Amie. Imagine being able to complete the dress in such a short notice. Your preggy friend must be very happy that she drank the milk and malt by herself, haha
