Final Thoughts From Harrisville

As I mentioned in my previous post, it can be a difficult task to get one of the lakefront sites at Harrisville State Park. When the window opens six months ahead of time, they go pretty quickly and many times people will book for multiple weeks to get first dibs on a site. Then they go back and cancel the first week or week and a half so they can claim a site a full two weeks before the window actually opens.

I've never played that game, but I know plenty of people do. They started implementing a cancelation fee schedule at the state level, but it still doesn't deter people too much. With most state park campsites sitting at around $30 to $35 per night, most people are willing to eat the cost.

If you do happen to score one of the water sites though, man, it's something else. At least until the above happens. @mrsbozz and I were sitting at our campsite watching the water when along comes this family walking down the (very rocky) beach. They plop down right in the beach area in front of our site and spend the next half hour looking at rocks.

Don't get me wrong, I know it's a public beach and they have every right to be there too, but most people just walk through, look at a few rocks, and then move along. This family literally sat there for half an hour. Trust me when I say, not a single one of them enhanced the natural beauty of the beach.

Another thing we like about Harrisville is the fact that they have a local guy who will drive to your site and deliver firewood to you. One of the biggest pains is getting all set up and then having to drive in circles for miles looking for dry quality wood to burn. Lately, I've been picking some up from my buddy @a4xjeeper before we head out for the weekend and that has worked well.

Our first night in Harrisville, the guy across the street from us had a full face cord delivered to his campsite. I think it was a face cord anyway, it might have been a full cord looking back at it. This was on Thursday night and by the time we left on Sunday they had barely touched the stack!

I guess though if you are doing all your cooking on the fire and you plan on having a fire all day, then it makes sense to get that much wood. The wind coming off Lake Huron can get a bit chilly, so daytime fires are definitely a thing.

Friday evening they had a car show with people parading their classic and custom autos through the park. It's a fairly large park, so they just go up and down the loops so that everyone can get a look at their cars. I guess if I put that much time and money into something I would want to show it off too!

There is a set of train tracks that run parallel to the campground in Harrisville. I thought at first it was a train coming when we started hearing the distant rumbling in a different part of the park. Then I remember it was the car show. They were all by in about twenty minutes, but it was really cool to see some of the cars and trucks.

I've been on a mission lately looking for a really good chocolate malt. That's pretty much the one thing I get through the summer. I've had them all over the state and some people make them really well, others not so much. The key to a good chocolate malt is using vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. What people don't realize is that chocolate ice cream is grainier by nature, so using that messes up the whole consistency of the malt.

The place right across the street from the campground in Harrisville makes a really good malt, so I had to stop in and get one.

We also stopped at a local bar to get a few appetizers to have with our lunch. I called in an order of chicken wings and an order of onion rings. When we went to pick them up, my wife noticed that they sold chicken dinner boxes by the pound. When I came walking out with the box, she assumed I had bought a chicken dinner. I was under the assumption that my wings were in the box.

We were both wrong. The box was in fact packed full of some of the most delicious beer battered onion rings we have ever had. Needless to say we didn't even come close to eating them all.

The chicken wings came in a standard take out box and to be honest, I wasn't really impressed with them. They used a dry rub on them that came across as very salty. I also think they over fried them a bit so they were a little dry.

The wings were meaty though and I definitely feel like they had some potential in other circumstances. I'd go here again, but if I got the wings I would probably try one of their sauces instead of the dry rub. I don't even remember now what the name of the restaurant was. There are only a couple in Harrisville though, so if you are ever up that way, it should be too hard to find. Just look for the sign advertising boxes of chicken!

@mrsbozz and I still have two more camping trips before we have to put away the trailer for the winter. I have one more to share from the summer and then the other two are fall camping trips. My favorite!
