Dominic Miller – Der Mann, der Sting zum Jazz führte.

To say it right from the start, it is quite simply the Sunday that I have been most eagerly awaiting. Without Dominic Miller, the matinée jazz stage would be poorer by one diamond!

Um es gleich vorab zu sagen, es ist schlicht und einfach der Sonntag, den ich bisher am sehnlichsten entgegenfieberte. Ohne Dominic Miller wäre die Matinee-Jazz Bühne einfach um einen Diamanten ärmer!

Dominic Miller, what kind of guy is he anyway and what does he stand for?

He started playing the guitar at the age of 15. Later, he studied at the Guildhall School for Music in London, which, however, became too dry for him after a while, despite working with interesting fellow students like Nigel Kennedy or Mike Lindup (later Level 42). He decided to seek his fortune as a studio musician.

Mit 15 Jahren lernte er Gitarre zu spielen. Später studierte er an der Guildhall School for Music in London, was ihm allerdings nach einiger Zeit trotz der Zusammenarbeit mit interessanten Kommilitonen wie Nigel Kennedy oder Mike Lindup (später Level 42) zu trocken wurde. Er beschloss, sein Glück als Studio-Musiker zu suchen.

Miller had his first notable recording in the late 1980s with Phil Collins' album "But Seriously..." on which he played guitar and wrote, for example, the characteristic guitar riff for "Another Day in Paradise". Miller only really became known, however, through his collaboration with Sting, which began in 1991.

Seine erste Beachtung findende Aufnahme hatte Miller Ende der 1980er Jahre mit Phil Collins’ Album „But Seriously…“ auf dem er Gitarre spielte und z.B. das charakteristische Gitarrenriff zu „Another Day in Paradise“ schrieb. Wirklich bekannt wurde Miller aber erst durch seine seit 1991 andauernde Zusammenarbeit mit Sting.

Through his friendship with Collins' producer Hugh Padgham, he came into contact with Sting, with whom he recorded the album The Soul Cages, which he played a decisive role in shaping. From then on, Miller was a permanent member of Sting's bands, both in the studio and on tours around the world. Sting often referred to him as "my right hand and my left hand" that "does all the things my clumsy fingers can't play".

Durch die Bekanntschaft mit Collins' Produzenten Hugh Padgham kam es zum Kontakt mit Sting, mit dem er das Album The Soul Cages einspielte und das er entscheidend mitprägte. Von da an zählte Miller zur ständigen Besetzung von Stings Bands, sowohl im Studio als auch auf den die Welt umspannenden Tourneen. Sting bezeichnete ihn häufig als „meine rechte und meine linke Hand“, die „all das umsetzt, was meine klobigen Finger nicht spielen können“.

Miller's intros and solos have made many of Sting's hits unmistakable, and as a co-composer he wrote melodies such as "Shape of My Heart", which has appeared again and again on the radio in countless cover versions since its release.
But other world hits also bear his signature, e.g. Ronan Keating's "You say it best" from the film "Notting Hill".

Millers Intros und Soli haben viele Hits von Sting unverwechselbar gemacht, als Co-Komponist schrieb er Melodien wie „Shape of My Heart“, das seit seiner Veröffentlichung auch in zahllosen Cover-Versionen immer wieder im Radio auftaucht.
Aber auch andere Welthits tragen seine Handschrift, z.B. Ronan Keatings „You say it best“ aus dem Film „Notting Hill“.

The latest project is an album with Level 42 bassist Mark King, drummer Ian Thomas (Eric Clapton, Seal) and jazz pianist Yaron Herman.
