[WE115] Weekend-Engagement - Self Portrait

Like every Friday morning I read Galen's writing suggestions and found them really intriguing this week. There's not much time left but you will find them here if you are desperate to write something within the next 8 hours or so (don't quote me on that timeframe).

The weekend immortality theme didn't seem that great but a clone - hmm, possibilities. And then there was Galen's first prompt

Your artistic weekend
Create an artwork of yourself using any medium you choose, engaging in one of your favourite weekend activities, photograph it, post it and explain your artwork. (The artwork must be of your own creation)

I honestly felt like he directed that prompt precisely at - me. What is that you say? I'm paranoid? Maybe - but I haven't been posting for the WE in a little while, mostly because I have been busy with work. I have read the prompts each week and here and there also posts but I haven't created a post myself.

So when I saw the artistic prompt I knew - this is it, this one I have to post for. And then - life happened. Hubby, an indie author, wanted to go to a colleague's book signing on Saturday. Nice waifu that I am I agreed to accompany him. And in all fairness, it was a fun little event. It also was in a Barnes & Nobles and I found an art book that just had to come home with me - hehehe. The thing is that the event was about an hour's drive away from home, the event was in the afternoon, so basically, the whole Saturday was gone. No time to work on any art.

Thankfully, I had started Friday night with this very, very loose pencil sketch and Saturday I stole a few minutes before making dinner to lay down the first layer of watercolor.

I did one or two self-portraits previously they were a bit more realistic than this one here. This one was to show the two quite different sides of me though it does have realistic elements e.g. the multiple earrings.

On the right-hand side is my somewhat drab, colorless life of working in corporate America, looking down somewhat seriously at my desk. And on the other hand my dreamy and colorful life as an artist and photographer looking up to the stars. There always have to be stars. You can find stars in a lot of my artwork.

Here are a few more photos of the work in progress.

This is a mixed media piece on a thick (140 lb/300 g/m2) and 11x14" / 27.9x35.6 cm big mixed media paper and a mix of pencil, watercolors, acrylic paint (white and gold), Micron pens, Posca pens, and the little metal moons, stars, and rhinestones.

A piece like this may not look like much but it still takes hours to finish, basically all Sunday. And it was a good way to spend this Sunday. Thank you, Galen.

Here are a few more zoomed-in pictures of some of the details as well as the final finished piece. Oh and a little gif 😇.

Yay!

My plot to draw you into the #weekend-engagement concept worked after all!

I'm glad you spent some time on Sunday drawing this, it's nice too, the colours and all, and I like the dual-personality aspect of it because, after all, there are always many facets to a person right?

Thanks for taking the time and sharing your drawing.

Yes, it worked. Your plot. Totally.

Thank you for providing the prompts. Unlike you, I don't normally know what to write about, so they are always welcome even if I don't participate or engage much. Yet when I have a picture or a walk or such - yup, then sometimes words flow.

A wise man once said, never underestimate the power of a determined #weekendexperiences mind.

Ok, it was me who said that.

Ok, I never actually said it, I typed it. Just now.

But it's wise.

Depending on ones perspective.

Otherwise it's just stupid.

or is it?

I'm glad you joined in and it's ok to do so sporadically; air know people have commitments.

Not sure about the #weekendexperiences but definitely do not, not ever, underestimate the power of a determined mind.

Sometimes determination pays off. Well, mostly. (Hubby got me through pure determination and perseverance - well, some other stuff, too).

I do think it is a wise saying. Does it make you wise?

Not sure. I don't know. You might well be. But - I don't know you too well to make that... determination.

LOL - okay, that's all I got for banter tonight - hahahaha - thanks again!

I applaud his determination...and other attributes that shall go unmentioned.

I do think it is a wise saying. Does it make you wise?

Some think so. Some do not. It's all about perspective.

I was quite glad to see a prompt that artistic people can lean towards and feel more at home. I am not saying that I am questioning Galenkp's prompts, rather I am commending his brilliancy in picking the prompts. It really isn't a community focused on things like music and art...

And there you come along with blessing us with your beautiful art. I am not an artist, but I can imagine how much time must have invested into acheiving this work. Coupled with the way you carried us along on how you made the artwork was really nice.

Well done! We get how work can be, but we still hope to see you more in the community.

Thank you so much, @olujay. @galenkp is quite the sly fox, isn't he, in the way he gets us to respond to his prompts? Hahaha - I don't mind at all though and I have a feeling that most if not all of the participants feel the same.

Thank you so much for your really nice comment, it is very kind of you and I appreciate it a lot.

Haha... I am just getting to know Galenkp. But I do know that I love his prompts. I never worry about what to talk about during the weekends as I am mostly busy then. You know how preparing with choir can be. I am actually a musician.
