Splinterlands - Taking a Look at Untamed versus Chaos in Oct. 2022

When Untamed series started its roll out some players were skeptical that the cards would rise in price like previous sets. The main reason being at the time it was 5 times the amount of packs than the first series, alpha, in the game.

Now more than a year later Untamed regular max level collection exceeds over $30k. If we take a quick comparison between Untamed and Chaos there are 10x more Chaos packs while Chaos full set is closer to $5.5k. My personally opinion is that Chaos would be closer to $60k if there were only 1.5 million packs ever printed for the set.

So would this mean Untamed cards are priced relatively better than that of Chaos? Well if you are looking for collecting NFTs for its rarity I would say yes. However if you were to play the game for what it is then I would say going with a Chaos set would be better. Main reason being you would have a lot of additional cash that you spend on other cards to build on top of the Chaos set rather than spending the same amount to obtain an Untamed set.

Prices of Individual Untamed

As a whole it does appear that the value of Untamed cards have been on a downward slope over the course of the past six months. However this by no means saying Untamed is cheaper.

It appears limited cards in the series has help in holding up its value in most cases. For example a Byzantine Kitty has pretty much been around the same price on average today than when it was six months ago. I would believe the limited amount of printed Kitty had a lot to do with why the card has held up in value. Of course the summoner is one of the most popular in the game so that helps a lot.

Price Gaps

Using Splintercards.com the price difference between single BCX versus cheapest per BCX in the market is very wide in the Untamed series.

This leads me to believe that although the current price of a full Untamed set is close to $30k the real number if the cards were sold at individual 1 bcx it would be much higher. There simply is not that many max level cards of the series out there in circulation with relative to how many players are playing. Over 300k accounts and only 1.5 million x 5 = 7.5 million max Untamed cards, which comes out to 25 Untamed cards per player if distributed evenly.

On the Chaos side card price gaps are not as significant.

However as time passes and when all packs are sold I think the prices will increase leading to what we see similar in Untamed where cards have higher % of price gap between 1 bcx to the lowest cost per bcx.

Conclusions

In the past six months it appears Chaos cards have been fluctuating more and trending slightly lower since its inception. The larger amount of packs being released and the demand for its cards has a lot to do with prices. Meanwhile Untamed has remain a valuable set to be collect as it has retained its value that is close to 6 times in value than a Chaos set.

In this review we did not go toe to toe between Untamed and Chaos cards but then again its difficult to compare when the values between the two are so wide and different. A lot of the Chaos cards relatively speaking are more comparative to the alpha/beta series than Untamed.

For what its worth I personal opinion is that owning a Chaos set should be priority of players who start or want to build a competitive collection of cards. The ability to simply be able to compete with less is the ideal way to get deeper into the ranks. This is because there are many other sets of cards where one may want to invest into even if its not the full sets but specific cards of the set. For instance some of the rewards cards that are now out of print but very useful in matches. We should explore how other cards outside of Untamed and Chaos that would be worthy to invest in another post.
