Planning to quit your job? Consider these...

avatar

Before you consider quitting your job, sitting around at home and being broke for days/weeks/months, how about you think about that decision again and ask yourself a really good question;

  • Were you doing your best in your job?

  • What other money-making option is there for you?

So many people are doing a job they hate and it's not uncommon to see people who would want to quit their job for some reason. In most cases, they feel they are not valued enough in their working place and they reach this conclusion by taking a look at their earnings.

The maths is clear, to be fair. When you know your worth and you know what you bring to the table, it becomes very hard for you to settle for less especially when you are being paid peanuts in a working environment that is considered toxic. Little wonder why people get feisty when it comes to negotiating their salary while undergoing a job interview. Nobody wants to be underpaid, but the reality is different. The majority of those that constitute the workforce in many countries are being underpaid.

Anyone in such a place would easily wake up at an ungodly hour in the day and say he/she wants to call it quits. Fair play to anyone like that. It takes a whole lot of balls to call it quits, but people don't just call it quits without having a Plan B. I don't know about the rest of the world, but you would be in all sorts of sh*t if you make a move like that in a country like mine.

This begs the question; what is the best way to quit your job?

Mostly, when people decide to quit their job, they either do it to get a better job in a better working environment or they do it to be a boss of their own as a business owner or freelancer.

Whatever the case may be, these are completely understandable. It's a plausible intent, but you can screw things up if you don't get your timing right. The timing is really important. Whether you want to move to a better job or start your own business, I guarantee that you don't necessarily have to quit before getting any of those.

How about you remain in the job you are currently doing? Regardless of how busy you are, there will always be a period on the job which you can use to do other things like polishing your CV, checking out job offers from prospective employers, and looking into the nitty-gritty of starting your own business... Stuff like that.

Don't quit until you've established an alternative source of income and you are sure that you are getting a sustainable amount from there. This will sound like some BS, but there is no point quitting your job (even if it's a job you hate) when you don't have money rolling in from any other place.

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma

Hahah... People will always feel undervalued in their current workplace. For such people, a post like this will help them think things through before quitting the job.

Back then, if things are not going in my way I immediately resign/leave work, but then I realized it is not helping me grow as a person. Now I am almost 4 years in the company that I had been working with. I have some love/hate relationship with them but I guess everything is tolerable, haha.

What other money-making option is there for you?

I have some side gigs, but this cannot replace my night job. I am earning peanuts for my side gigs for now.

Wow... Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this. I'm impressed with the improvement you've made. That decision to stick around even when things are not exactly going well is a good thing. An ability to keep a job is not to be taken for granted.

I have some side gigs, but this cannot replace my night job. I am earning peanuts for my side gigs for now.

Keep it up. Those side gigs can blow up before you know it. Then, it will massively improve your earning. Hehe.
