๐Ÿฉ๐ŸŸ Sesame Donuts, Sweet Potato Fries, & Story Problems ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿงฎ

SESAME.png

When you live in such a remote location like my family, there is plenty of time to spend in the kitchen snacking and cooking, and this week's highlights were sesame donuts and sweet potato fries.

Monkey-B Takes On Story Problems ๐Ÿง

STORY.png

ย  ย  ย Even though there are no English education options near us, I do my best to keep Monkey-B's English education going. The iOS Khan Academy app is a lifesaver, and she's now into 3rd Grade Prep curriculum, not far behind for her age level if she were a student in the USA.

Sesame-Palm Sugar Donuts ๐Ÿฉ

SESAMEHOLE.png

ย  ย  ย Fast forward a day and it's sesame and palm sugar-glazed donuts for all, including our family friend Mey-Yii, someone who spends more time here with us than at her Grandma's house. She's not a fan of vegetables yet, but there is no kid that will turn away from homemade donuts.

fry.png

ย  ย  ย To keep things delicious, later on in the day or or a totally different day, we made sweet potato fries as well. I couldn't even get a clear picture because their arms were moving so fast.

fry1.png

ย  ย  ย I like natural photos, so often times I don't mention that I'm snapping shots, and pretend to be reading something on my phone. @srey-yuu caught me in the act, and you can see her look of teenage scorn and fury.

Unplanned Sleepover ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

nood.png

ย  ย  ย Last night we got a call from Mey-Yii's grandma that she'd gone to the casino and wouldn't be back until late, and had locked Mey-Yii out of the house. We knew this meant she'd probably be sleeping at our house for the first time, and that's exactly what happened. At 8pm the kids were getting sleepy so we put them all to bed, and we let Mey-Yii borrow some school clothes from Monkey-B in the morning.

ย  ย  ย We made sure Mey-Yii had some breakfast, and then I took the usual 7 kids to school in the tuk-tuk. Mey-Yii stopped by her house before leaving for school and found her Grandma crying, and we can only assume she lost a massive amount of money gambling last night. There are a lot of vices in this village, but alcohol and gambling at the nearby casino cause the most damage.

Oh what a shame, preferring gambling over kids whereabouts. Thats just too much, I hope they would have a change of ways.

It's already the second night Mey-Yii has slept at our house, not sure where this is going, but I have no sympathy for the grandmother.

A yummy delicious treat.
Why did she gamble , if she was going to end up crying?

I think Mey-Yii's grandma was crying in the morning because she lost a lot of money the previous night at the casino. I am just glad she is welcome in our home and knows she always has a safe space here.

It is so sad, but it seems many people in our village have no self-control when it comes to gambling.

I love sweet potato fries! I usually order that whenever I go to a coffee shops that have that on their menu.

Not a fan of gambling too. I think the promise of the possibility to easily win a large amount of money motivates these gamblers to also gamble the well being of their family.

I think sweet potato fries are more forgiving for the cook too. I always parboil regular potatoes before turning into french fries so they don't become soggy and oily. Gambling seems like such silly pursuit, but I am biased as a non-gambler I guess. From the exterior of the buildings it's clear they take more from their customers than other kinds of businesses.

I think this gambling thing is an endorphin addiction because I've never met a Cambodian that will play a game of cards just for the fun of it. Even if it's just 2 or 3 cents per hand, money has to be involved, seems like playing GTA V would be more constructive and a cheaper habit.

Thanks for the tip. At home, we mostly just boil the sweet potatoes. We rarely fry them and when we do, we fry them directly. ๐Ÿ˜

That is unbelievable. Why would she choose to gamble over her own granddaughter? I really hope that she can do better in the future, and of course, stay away from gambling and not to follow her grandma footstep.

I hope her future follows a very different path than her grandma, and I can only hope she stays in touch with us and we get to see her become a young successful lady.

Sesame donuts and french fries are snacks that are very popular with children, especially if the weather is rainy and the two snacks are served hot, huumm..yummy ๐Ÿคค

Monkey-B is very studious, thankfully in this day and age everything is easy with technology. just learn through your phone or tablet ๐Ÿ‘

It's so funny to see @srey-yuu's face pouting like that, he must be very angry with you ๐Ÿ˜„

Hopefully sooner or later, Mey-Yii's grandmother will soon realize her guilt from the bad influence of alcohol and gambling..

I certainly have some cheeky daughters, but as long as they have enough delicious food they behave well ๐Ÿ˜‰.

I must say there is little hope for Mey-Yii's grandma, I think us adults are reluctant to change our ways. However, I do hope Mey-Yii's life has a very different path than this woman.

Children are very fond of donuts, they are always haunted by donuts almost every day like children at home, I have to order more donuts from the shop, seeing the atmosphere wants me to the children at home. :)

Haha, yes, I love our homemade donuts, but the palm sugar glaze wants to pull the teeth out of my mouth, so very sticky ๐Ÿ˜.

Gambling and drinking grannies. What a place. It's pretty sad but man they are lucky to have people like you(r family) around

Cambodia is a pretty messed up place, but now that I've spent so much time here, when I visit other countries I feel like everything is too perfect, and something inside me tells me not believe the exterior.

Cambodian definitely has lots of problems, but for the most part there is no effort to disguise them, so in some ways it's easier to navigate life and avoid bad situations and people.

Yes, it's true what you said, living in a remote area has a lot of free time, making snacks such as donuts and fries is fun.

You secretly also had time to take pictures of the children eating snacks.
the funny thing is that @srey-yuu face is a little annoyed.

It's only natural that he's upset because he's not ready for you to take his picture.
they look very hard working.

If I don't take secret pictures of Srey-Yuu, she'll hide her face in every photo attempt. I guess that is her teenage nature, but it's also a bit playful too because if I try hard enough I can even get her to laugh. When she's laughing that is my chance to take some good photos ๐Ÿ˜€.

Yes, maybe the nature of the teenager has an effect too, which is funny, the still innocent face looks very beautiful.
Maybe if sre-yuu it will look even better.
I'm so glad to see you took some pictures of them.

Palm sugar glazed donut I like! Sweet potato fries is our thing too!

Sad that Mei-Yii stuck with such family. With this kind of family background, I don't even know how to pray for her to begin with. Ask God to change her grandma?

Sweet potatoes are cheaper than regular potatoes here, plus they fry better without being parboiled first, so it's a win-win. I have lost a lot of sleep worrying about Mey-Yii and her home situation, but like you said, it's almost impossible to begin thinking about how we could solve this.

We would happily adopt her, but I know her Grandma likes having an errand runner in the house and someone to talk to when her card-playing friends go home. I always joke with my wife about how many Khmers spend their days watching Thai drama TV shows, such fake situations, their skin is whiter than mine, the houses look like they are in Monaco, and all the drama is about love stuff.

Khmers produce enough of their own drama, and it's a far better storyline than any drama a VIP family goes through. This is a film worth watching if you ever have time, and although fictional, it's a story that happens all too often here. The director was a friend of mine in a town I used to live in.
