Before we talk about the advantages of internal linking, we need to know what are internal links.

Internal Links: Internal links are the links to other pages on a same website.

Advantages of Internal Links

If you want to rank your website, it would need links. Google finds your content and pages best when they are linked.

Internal linking is important as it is used by search engines and users to find content on your website.

Internal links give an idea to Google about the structure of a website by connecting content on it.

Through internal linking users navigate on your website and find content what they want.

Search engines also use links in navigating through your website.

Google ranks a website better if internal links are put at the right place.

Setting Up Internal Links

There are a few things to take in mind while putting internal links in your content.

Some of the strategies are:

  • Determine what your most important content is. It's the content that may be of great help in providing value to your business. It's the content you want people to find. You are also telling Google that it's the most important content. Therefore you may need to add many links to it.
  • Link articles which represent talk about relevant topics.
  • Link your most popular or recent posts.
  • Use the anchor text while putting links in your content.

Putting Too Much Internal Links

As we have discussed the importance of these internal links and how they send signals to Google about which pages are most important to a specific website. Using too much of internnal can also be damaging.

This is actually what I needed to talk about. Putting too much of internal links on the same page can dilute their value.

Using too much internal links is confusing Google and Google won't be able to understand website's structure.

Putting an internal link is signaling Google that a page is important to the website, but if more internal links are added, it starts to seem less important.

In other words, using too much of these internal links do more harm than good.

Just another point to keep in mind: don't place links in the first 120 characters of the text portion of a post (cover image doesn't count). These characters appear in feeds and in search results, so this screen space is crucial. A link here kills people's desire to visit the page.
