[ENG] Tekken, the Mishima curse: the origin of the conflict between Kazuya and Heihachi

It was way back in December 1994 when Namco released worldwide the first chapter of the glorious Tekken saga, a successful video game that revolutionised the concept of fighting games in the 1990s both for its innovative graphics and, above all, its realistic gameplay.

The commercial success of Tekken should not only be analysed for the novelty it was able to offer at the time, but also for the storyline centred on the eternal struggle between the members of the Mishima family, a clash that still seems to have no winner.

The main series has reached Chapter 8, which will probably be released in the last months of 2023 or early 2024. I've decided to do a series of in-depth posts on the entire work and I'm going to reconstruct, step by step, the evolution of Namco's product and retrace the history of the characters up to new branches of the plot, which still leaves some question marks over the future of Jin Kazama and his family.

Let's start with the first video game, Tekken, which explains how it all began.

TEKKEN

In the beginning, Tekken was a coin-op, i.e. an arcade that could only be found in popular arcades. Thanks to the emergence of the latest generation of consoles, in this case the Sony Play Station, many of these arcades had the opportunity to be converted onto CDs and launched on the home video game market: among the lucky ones was Tekken, which finally had the chance to be noticed even where it was not yet known.

Tekken was a real revelation for fans of the genre and established itself as a viable alternative to SEGA's Virtua Fighter, famous worldwide as one of the first fighting games developed in 3D.

Tekken, however, showed something truly new, in fact, each character possessed a real fighting style and each joypad button corresponded to a limb of the body so that the chosen fighter could fight to his full potential during fights.

Furthermore, unlike Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and other cult favourites, Tekken allowed the character to keep his back to the gamer if he was on the right of the screen and no longer on the left as at the beginning of each level.

The most appealing thing, however, was (and still is) the possibility of using the keyboard to initiate combo strikes, devastating combos and special moves capable of ending a fight even with a single blow to the opponent.

Precisely for the latter reason, Tekken proved to be a very fast but at the same time tactical and intelligent fighting game. Playing it on the Play Station and accessing the main menu, it was even possible to set the keys L1, L2, R1 and R3 in such a way as to incorporate two key combinations (like the two fists) and thus directly initiate a death grip of one's warrior with the help of a single button.

Although it was possible to choose the level of difficulty, Tekken presented itself as a tough nut to crack and made as many as eight characters available to the player, through which nine more could be unlocked. Each of them offered a different ending to the game and had their own reference level, many of them inspired by real-life places like Monument Valley, King George Island and Angkor Wat (just to name a few).

Tekken was a huge success in commercial terms, prompting the creators to make a second chapter, and numerous sequels (including Tag Tournaments) also made available on Microsoft and Nintendo platforms.

The plot

The plot of Tekken is among the most compelling and violent ever because of the conflicting relationship between the two main protagonists of this first part of the story, namely Heihachi Mishima and his son Kazuya. Heihachi is the undisputed leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu, a powerful organisation aiming at world conquest despite the fact that his father, Jinpachi, founded it to do good works.

Heihachi, in fact, comes across as a bad man, ruthless and devoid of feelings even towards his only son, Kazuya, who is characterised by a good and peaceful nature. Heihachi's goal is to transform Kazuya into a perfect copy of him, so as to make him a worthy heir both at the head of the organisation and as a warrior. However, when he was practically a child, Kazuya committed a carelessness that cost him dearly: he consoled a girl of his age for the loss of her rabbit and this gesture was seen by Heihachi as a sign of weakness, which is why he grabbed his son and threw him into the mouth of a volcano, inviting him to go up the cliff.

Little Mishima, however, never returned from that inferno and his father was convinced it was too late to see him alive again. After the tragic episode, Jinpachi Mishima noticed his grandson's sudden disappearance and asked his son what had happened to him but the only answer he got was imprisonment in the Honmaru, where he starved to death and was forgotten by the world.

Having now become master of the organisation, Heihachi will spend the next 20 years spreading panic throughout the world with the aim of subjugating all peoples to his will and taking away all material and territorial wealth from them. To do this, however, he needs to eliminate the strongest fighters in the land, many of whom resent him for all the evil inflicted in those years following the disappearance of Jinpachi and Kazuya. Thus, the evil Heihachi organised the first Tekken that would elect the King of Iron Fist Tornament. Well, the tournament participants include Kazuya who miraculously survived his father's madness and is intent on taking revenge on him.

Kazuya is now 26 years old, but he has emerged from that terrible experience completely transformed both physically and mentally: he has a huge scar on his chest representing direct contact with his demonic side, Devil, which he met in the moments he lived in the mouth of the volcano, suspended between life and death.

Kazuya, in fact, begged Devil to help him survive and become stronger, but the entity asked for his soul in return, receiving a positive response. From then on, Kazuya lived in hatred and resentment towards his father, harbouring the desire to kill him every day. There was nothing left of the sweet and sensitive child because the devil gene had now taken possession of him.

After several fights, Kazuya reached the final and defeated his father, only to throw his body off the very cliff that changed their lives and marked their destinies. Obviously, since the video game features multiple characters and since each of them has an ending, the player only learns of the winner of the tournament in Tekken 2, where Kazuya took his father's place at the helm of the Mishima Zaibatsu.

The characters

Ready to play characters

The game allows 9 characters to be played from the start:

Kazuya Mishima: he is the main protagonist of the game. As a child, his father threw him off the cliff of a volcano and ordered him to climb it. Seventeen years later, Kazuya returns now devoid of good feelings and completely enslaved by Devil, the demon who saved him from the volcano's lava to whom he had to sell his soul.

Kazuya wins the tournament by taking revenge on his father, who will find death after being thrown by his son off the very cliff that started the conflict. Kazuya has a peculiar appearance that at times makes him resemble his father because of his thick eyebrows and spiky hair at the back of his neck.

Paul Phoenix: he is one of the characters who will maintain a fixed position within the saga. Paul is a twenty-five year old boy from the USA, a karate expert and friend of Marshall Law. He is considered one of the strongest martial artists in the world but his dreams of winning Tekken will be shattered when he faces the ruthless Kazuya.

Looking at him at first glance, he looks like a sort of Street Fighter remake of Guile because of his brush blond hair. There's no denying, however, that he also has a lot in common with Ken Masters because of the slightly more 'oriental' character and that faithful red kimono he'll wear in most of the Tekken chapters, not to mention the fact that Paul combines judo with karate.

Yoshimitsu: this character will also be omnipresent throughout the plot in the events to follow. Yoshimitsu is a gentleman thief, head of the Manji clan, who participates in the Iron Fist tournament with the aim of robbing Heihachi Mishima.

In fact, after beating the treasure guard Ganryu, he succeeds in his intention by donating much of the loot to the Chinese village from which Marshall Law comes. Yoshimitsu is the only character to fight armed with a sword and his face is covered by an Oni mask with two horns and a red forelock.

Nina Williams: she will be another of the longest-lived characters in the series. Nina is none other than the femme fatale of Tekken. She is a skilled Irish assassin hired by Heihachi to kill Kazuya before he could make it to the finals and thus make himself dangerous. Nina, however, fails in her quest because of her sister Anna who intervenes during the tournament to spoil her plans.

Since childhood, Nina and Anna have been pupils of their parents from whom they learned the art of aikido. After the death of their mother, the two girls also saw their father die in a gun battle between soldiers and since then their relationship has changed dramatically. Nina and Anna have become, let's say, enemies and every time they meet, they hold their father's death against each other, expressing a relationship made up of old grudges and jealousies.

Michelle Chang: is an eighteen-year-old girl born from the union between a Native American and a Hong Kong man. Michelle participates in the tournament to protect her village from Heihachi's thirst for power and to avenge her father's death at his hands. Her fighting style is Kung Fu. She is shown as a beautiful brown-haired huntress told by a thick braid.

Marshall Law: He is practically a reproduction of Bruce Lee both in appearance and in the fighting technique used, namely Jeet Kune Doe. He is one of the strongest and most user-friendly characters. He works in a restaurant with the hope of putting some money aside and opening his own dojo. As soon as he learns about the tournament, he decides to take part as the winner will receive a large cash prize.

King: if Marshall Law is the spitting image of Bruce Lee, King is nothing but an homage to Tiger Man. He is a Mexican wrestler who wears a jaguar mask. In everyday life he is a priest and decides to enter the tournament to win the prize money and build an orphanage for his children.

Jack: is a military cyborg built in Russia by Dr. Boskonovitch for the purpose of creating a special assault weapon for the military forces of the former USSR. He participates in the tournament with the aim of testing his strength but eventually escapes, only to find himself fighting another cyborg, Prototype Jack, whom he manages to defeat. Technique used: brute force.

Characters to unlock:

Heihachi Mishima (final boss to unlock): head of the Mishima Zaibatsu and father of Kazuya. He takes on the first Tekken to kill his worst enemies but ends up coming face to face with the son he thought was dead so many years ago. Fighting style: Mishima Karate.

Anna Williams (to be unlocked by finishing the game with Nina): For her story, just reread Nina's story. Aesthetically, she is very different from her sister: whereas Nina is blonde with green eyes, Anna appears with chestnut brown hair and is usually dressed provocatively.

Armor King (King): he is King's counterpart and can be seen by the fact that he is a Mexican wrestler masquerading as a (black) jaguar just like him. The reasons for his participation in the tournament are unknown but in later chapters his role will prove decisive for the evolution of King's character.

Ganryu (Yoshimitsu): he is a 32-year-old sumo wrestler who had to abandon the discipline because of his bad temper. He is in love with Michelle Chang but his love is never reciprocated. In Tekken he is basically the guard of Heihachi's treasure room.

Kuma (Paul): He is a bear that Heihachi Mishima took under his wing and taught martial arts to, turning him into an intelligent and protective being. In the first Tekken he is beaten by Paul Phoenix.

Kunimitsu (Michelle): she is a member of the Manji clan, therefore related to Yoshimitsu with whom she shares ninjutsu. She participates in the tournament because she is interested in the treasures of Michelle Chang's tribe. She wears a white mask, so her identity is unknown.

Lee Chaolan (Kazuya): He is Heihachi's adopted son and Kazuya's half-brother. He joined the Mishima family after spending many years as an orphan and vagabond fighting on the streets. Heihachi noticed him and decided to adopt him to foster a sense of rivalry from Kazuya (so he knew his son was still alive). Lee was a pupil of Law and Paul, which is why he has a fighting style in which he can combine three different techniques.

Prototype Jack (Jack): he is a Russian military cyborg who enters the tournament solely to destroy Jack, but fate will be against him as he will be defeated by his rival.

Wang Jinrei (Law): Master of Xing Yi Quan, Wang is considered one of the strongest warriors on earth. He has been a great friend of Jinpachi Mishima and participates in the tournament intent on discovering the truth about the sudden disappearance of Heihachi's father. In fact, all this is possible for him because he first becomes the gardener of the Mishima Zaibatsu.

Secret characters:

Devil Kazuya: Kazuya's alternative costume to be unlocked after finishing the Galaga minigame.

Wildcard: This is a character downloadable as a trick in the arcade version. He is nothing more than a mix between Kazuya, Paul and Yoshimitzu.

Dragonclaw: is a mysterious transparent green version of Jack only visible after unlocking all characters.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Have you ever played Tekken? What was your favourite character?

Tu as déjà joué à Tekken ? Quel était votre personnage préféré ?

It is cool to see someone talk about Tekken 1 today...but I think that whatever source you used here is sort of off the mark. Wild Card IS an exclusive Arcade character, but is basically a glitch/placeholder one (instead of an intentional secret character, as you need a cheat code in emulator to use him) with how he looks like Kazuya with Yoshimitsu's moves...and oddly enough, an unique/unused voice.

But Dragonclaw is literally just a myth/rumor, he never existed in the game lol

No online source on dragonclaw, just the rumours among my friends and peers. But in reality it's all rubbish. 😅

As this is a review of the game in all its versions, I felt I should also include wildcard as a curiosity, even if it is only juvenile on the emulator. Thank you for your comment.

Very interesting how you explained everything in this article, I've played Tekken since I was a kid and I think it's one of the best fighting games, my favourite character is Kazuya Mishima.
