Hi I am ai chan, veteran weeb and gamer :D This year from the 4th-5th June I visited the anual Dokomi in Düsseldorf, which is the biggest Anime/Manga Convention in Germany and also in Europe. Record breaking 65 thousand visitors in 2 days are quite a lot for small Düsseldorf german city to bear, even if they have a convention center. Well Düsseldorf is know as little tokyo among germans anyway, so it kinda fits.

Hi ich bin ai chan, altgedienter Weeb und Gamer :D Dieses Jahr habe ich vom 4. bis 5. Juni die jährliche Dokomi in Düsseldorf besucht, die größte Anime/Manga Convention in Deutschland und auch in Europa. Rekordverdächtige 65 Tausend Besucher in 2 Tagen sind für die kleine deutsche Stadt Düsseldorf eine ganze Menge, auch wenn sie ein Kongresszentrum hat. Nun, Düsseldorf ist unter den Deutschen sowieso als kleines Tokio bekannt, also passt es irgendwie.

All sorts of Cosplayers, Anime and Manga fans around europe gathered there. I also met someone who came all the way from canada to germany for dokomi. All interviews can be found on my tiktok.com/@aichanbot. As a veteran convention guest since 2002, I though I know what was waiting for me there, but I was wrong. :D

So Fans from all over Europe gather to meet their favorite artists, designers and cosplayers, checking out video games and stock up on the latest curiosities from Japan in the dealer room.
The biggest convention in the subculture universe of anime, manga and video games with a focus on anime and manga, can boast itself with 65.000 visitors this year after a long break due to corona. I have checked the programm on site and it was truely a challenge, because most of the cosplayers were just meeting outside in the japanese garden close the convention center for their photoshootings, and most of the dealers and workshops were again inside the conventions hall. The Fair ground is just huge and so it was impossible to visit all the positiblities which were offered there in two days. Simply not possible due to time constraint.

Alle Arten von Cosplayern, Anime- und Manga-Fans aus ganz Europa kamen dort zusammen. Ich habe auch jemanden getroffen, der den ganzen Weg von Kanada nach Deutschland für die Dokomi gekommen ist. Alle Interviews sind auf meiner tiktok.com/@aichanbot zu finden. Als erfahrener Convention-Gast seit 2002 dachte ich, ich wüsste, was mich dort erwartete, aber ich habe mich geirrt :D

So kommen Fans aus ganz Europa zusammen, um ihre Lieblingskünstler, Designer und Cosplayer zu treffen, Videospiele zu testen und sich im Händlerraum mit den neuesten Kuriositäten aus Japan einzudecken.
Die größte Convention im Subkultur-Universum von Anime, Manga und Videospielen mit Schwerpunkt auf Anime und Manga, kann sich dieses Jahr nach einer langen corona-bedingten Pause mit 65.000 Besuchern rühmen. Ich habe mir das Programm vor Ort angeschaut und es war wirklich eine Herausforderung, denn die meisten Cosplayer trafen sich nur draußen im japanischen Garten in der Nähe des Convention Centers für ihre Fotoshootings, und die meisten Händler und Workshops waren wieder in der Convention-Halle. Das Messegelände ist einfach riesig und so war es unmöglich, in zwei Tagen alles zu besuchen, was dort angeboten wurde. Es war einfach nicht möglich, weil die Zeit knapp war.

Above that, I had a small accident which limit me in my movement, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the con. A true weeb knows no pain at a convention, we just simply stand up and keep on doing whatever we were going to do at a convention.

The star contingent of dokomi was really diverse, that's all I can say from "Odettemita (Japanese Pop Dancing Culture" Idols, to Vtubers and Japanese musician. Everything imaginable was there, I got lucky and caught Ashibuto Penta in the Foyer for a small interview, I didn't even know who she was after I googled it after the interview. Even as a veteran, there is still so much to learn. :D

Außerdem hatte ich einen kleinen Unfall, der mich in meiner Bewegungsfreiheit einschränkte, aber das hielt mich nicht davon ab, die Convention zu genießen. Ein echter Weeb kennt keinen Schmerz auf einer Convention, wir stehen einfach auf und machen weiter, was auch immer wir auf einer Convention machen.

Das Staraufgebot der Dokomi war wirklich vielfältig, das ist alles, was ich sagen kann, von "Odettemita (japanische Pop-Tanz-Kultur) Idolen, bis hin zu Vtubern und japanischen Musikern. Ich hatte Glück und erwischte Ashibuto Penta im Foyer für ein kleines Interview, ich wusste nicht einmal, wer sie war, nachdem ich es nach dem Interview gegoogelt hatte. Selbst als Veteran gibt es noch so viel zu lernen :D

What do you do at the "Dokomi"?

  • Participate in Workshops, watch show events, join Gaming contests, seek autographs from your favorite idol or picture shootings with your favorite cosplayer. Most of these offers are included in the convention ticket, what I still like about anime/manga conventions compared to comic cons, where you have to pay for every panel extra. But that means also be their on time or better early because some of the activities are so popular that people line up like hours before.

Was macht man auf der "Dokomi"?

  • An Workshops teilnehmen, Show-Events anschauen, an Gaming-Wettbewerben teilnehmen, Autogramme von deinem Lieblingsidol oder Fotoshootings mit deinem Lieblings-Cosplayer suchen. Die meisten dieser Angebote sind im Convention-Ticket inbegriffen, was ich immer noch an Anime/Manga-Conventions mag, im Gegensatz zu Comic-Cons, wo man für jedes Panel extra bezahlen muss. Das bedeutet aber auch, dass man pünktlich oder besser früh da sein sollte, denn einige der Aktivitäten sind so beliebt, dass die Leute schon Stunden vorher Schlange stehen.

As a true otaku, I can recommend to study the program at the dokomi which is fat booklet showing you everything going on and a detailed map of the facility. :)

Good to know: there is a cosplay ball and a j-rave after regular opening time for the dokomi. Which means you don't have to go home after dinner. :D but cosplay ball and j-rave for example needs an extra ticket. I can only recommend for fans to join, it is a once a year chance to do so!

Als echter Otaku kann ich nur empfehlen, das Programm der Dokomi zu studieren, ein dickes Buch, in dem alles steht, was los ist, und eine detaillierte Karte der Anlage :)

Gut zu wissen: Nach der regulären Öffnungszeit der Dokomi gibt es einen Cosplay-Ball und einen J-Rave. Das bedeutet, dass man nach dem Abendessen nicht nach Hause gehen muss :D aber für den Cosplay-Ball und den J-Rave braucht man ein extra Ticket. Ich kann den Fans nur empfehlen, daran teilzunehmen, es ist eine einmalige Gelegenheit im Jahr, dies zu tun.

Important: Collecting merchandise and goodies from anime and manga. So many retailers are there! But i have seen only a few give-aways and freebies at the convention. There was everything for the small and the big purse, but also the inflation here has risen the price. So what you can buy online for 10 Euro, at the convention will cost you 40 :D Also snacking, Kimonos and Cosplay
merch were well represented.

Wichtig: Sammeln von Merchandise und Goodies aus Anime und Manga. So viele Händler sind dort! Aber ich habe nur wenige Give-aways und Freebies auf der Convention gesehen. Es gab alles für den kleinen und den großen Geldbeutel, aber auch hier hat die Inflation den Preis in die Höhe getrieben. Also was man online für 10 Euro kaufen kann, kostet auf der Convention 40 :D Auch Naschereien, Kimonos und Cosplay Merch waren gut vertreten.

Drawing workshops for aspiring comic artists and mangaka were also available. Also the Fanart Hall was the biggest I have seen in Europe so far, it is close to comiket size filled with fan artist and independent Artists. It is kinda overwhelming because in this fan hall you can also find cosplay and merch made by fans, where some of it are shere incredible!

The Bring and Buy is a good opportunity to get rid of some of your old merchs or restock with something someonese doesn't want anymore.

Es wurden auch Zeichenworkshops für angehende Comiczeichner und Mangaka angeboten. Auch die Fanart-Halle war die größte, die ich bisher in Europa gesehen habe. Sie ist fast so groß wie die Comiket, gefüllt mit Fankünstlern und unabhängigen Künstlern. Es ist irgendwie überwältigend, weil man in dieser Fanhalle auch Cosplay und Merch von Fans finden kann, wobei einige davon wirklich unglaublich sind!

Das Bring and Buy ist eine gute Gelegenheit, um einige alte Fanartikel loszuwerden oder sich mit etwas einzudecken, das andere nicht mehr wollen.

One of the many highlights of the dokomi is the Cosplay/Costume Contest, this year I can say for sure that genshin and demonslayer was very popular. I missed the demonslayer gathering by a minute :D My personal highlight was the 18+ Corner though :D I have never seen something like this at a convention lol... I can't show you pictures of that corner cause it wasn't allowed to take pictures, you will just have to go there and check it out for yourself. :D Onlyfans Ahoi!

Eines der vielen Highlights der Dokomi ist der Cosplay/Kostümwettbewerb, dieses Jahr kann ich mit Sicherheit sagen, dass Genshin und Demonslayer sehr beliebt waren. Ich habe das Dämonentöter-Treffen um eine Minute verpasst :D Mein persönliches Highlight war allerdings die 18+ Ecke :D So etwas habe ich noch nie auf einer Convention gesehen lol... Ich kann euch leider keine Bilder von der Ecke zeigen, da es nicht erlaubt war, Fotos zu machen, ihr müsst einfach hingehen und es euch selbst ansehen :D Onlyfans Ahoi!

Good to know:

  • Filming and streaming was not restricted from most of the halls, but the internet connection didn't really allow live streaming from the dokomi. Maybe that was intended? So back to pictures and small clips of the event. I have to say for me the highlight of the dokomi was the size and possiblities offered. I even jumped into a host cafe for a couple of minutes, had interviews with uncountable cosplayer and fans. I enjoyed my anonymity and light-heartedness of the fellow fans and otakus. It felt like home and talking to friends which you haven't met for a long time. :D

Gut zu wissen:

  • Das Filmen und Streamen war in den meisten Hallen nicht eingeschränkt, aber die Internetverbindung erlaubte nicht wirklich ein Live-Streaming von der Dokomi. Vielleicht war das beabsichtigt? Also zurück zu Bildern und kleinen Clips von der Veranstaltung. Ich muss sagen, für mich war das Highlight der Dokomi die Größe und die Möglichkeiten, die geboten wurden. Ich bin sogar für ein paar Minuten in ein Host-Cafe gesprungen, habe Interviews mit unzähligen Cosplayern und Fans geführt. Ich genoss meine Anonymität und die Unbeschwertheit der anderen Fans und Otakus. Es fühlte sich an wie zu Hause und wie ein Gespräch mit Freunden, die man schon lange nicht mehr getroffen hat :D

On top:
The japanese food in Düsseldorf is TOP of the notch! real japanese cuisine which I haven't had for years, since my exchange year in Tokyo / Yokohama. I wouldn't recommend the food from the fair, just bear it bring your own snacks, and then go lunch or dinner in the city. It is really amazing!

Zusätzlich:
Das japanische Essen in Düsseldorf ist TOP! Echte japanische Küche, die ich seit Jahren nicht mehr gegessen habe, seit meinem Austauschjahr in Tokyo / Yokohama. Ich würde nicht empfehlen, das Essen auf der Messe zu kaufen, sondern es zu ertragen, seine eigenen Snacks mitzubringen und dann in der Stadt zu Mittag oder zu Abend zu essen. Es ist wirklich erstaunlich!

Das Handynetz ist immer pünktlich gegen 12Uhr zusammengebrochen, was für uns als Händler kacke war, da dadurch auch leider keine Kartenzahlung mehr möglich war...
War aber echt schön, auch wenn ich nur aufm Weg zur Toilette bissel was sehen konnte oder halt nach Ende, wenn die Besucher draußen waren xD
Ein Highlight für mich waren die Durchsagen ála "deine Freundin wartet schon sehr sehr lange auf dich"
