My LPUD and a beautiful lion gold coin

Happy Leo Power Up Day!

It may seem odd, but I don't believe I have ever participated in a Leo Power Up Day. Today is the day I decided to change that omission on my part. I have powered up that amount or more in the past but never quite got around to creating a post to accompany it. First up here we go, the power up!

Now I could call it a lazy post there and just do the power up. But where's the fun in that? While researching for my last post with the silver floppy disk I also came across a lion coin that I thought would fit nicely with LPUD. Have a look at the Niue 2024 $50 one ounce gold coin:

About the coin:

These are being produced by the Czech Mint for the island of Niue. What really caught my eye about this coin is not so much the design (which is pretty cool), but that it comes in different sizes. They offer the one ounce, one half ounce, one quarter ounce, and the smallest at 1/25th ounce! The one ounce runs $2,710, a $323 premium over gold price per coin, a little expensive. At first I thought the smaller option might make for a good investment since they are priced at $150, at least until I did the math. 1/25th ounce is only $95 worth of gold, so you are paying a $55 premium per coin, that's pretty steep. Also the mintage on the 1/25th ounce coin in going to be 49,000, so not much room for future appreciation. But it is fractional gold which is always nice to own.

So I looked around some more and realized that the Austrian Philharmonic 1/25th ounce gold coin is priced at $137, a much better deal. So I think Niue is starting to price themselves a little out of the market. I think I would be much better off with some of these rather than the ones from Niue:

Granted you don't get a guarantee on mintage but a $42 dollar premium is a lot more palatable (although still expensive.)

Now if you really want to be a cheapskate (which I have been known to be at times) then you have to go for the one gram random mint gold bars that you can pick up on eBay. A random one gram bar runs about $87.07. I do realize that 1/25th of an ounce is more gold, because if you do the math it's about 1.134 grams, but the premium will still be much higher on the coins.

Personally my favorite gold is the kind you pick up for free by prospecting, it's a lot more work but much more satisfying when you pull your own gold right out the ground! I'll have to do another gold nugget post again soon, those are fun to write.

That's more rambling about gold than I intended, so I think I'll call it a day. Thank you for stopping by, I really do appreciate all of your support! If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments please feel free to leaven them below. Have a great day!

The Niue Gold Lion coin is beautiful, but like you said a little pricey!🙄
I definitely agree with you the gold Austrian Philharmonic would be my choice as well with less premium over spot!👍

I totally forgot about LPUD. This is probably the first one in a while I haven't participated in.

I did actually. It was interesting, I didn't hate it, but an interesting choice on his part.

A Niue republic coin with a Czech Republic Reverse and obversed by a UK Head of State, this coin could develop an identity problem.
I'd like to find free gold too. I planned a few beach outings with my sons and Garrett detector this summer.

Congratulations on your power-up, since it's the first time, I believe many more to follow for you. Maybe include a screenshot too, so it's easy to see the power up process.
